Combining her dual passion in the study of art history and the practice of painting, Joyce Lee has developed in her private studio an oeuvre of landscapes based on symbols and ideas drawn from Chinese art and culture. For Joyce, her works reveal a realm that's filled with light, where Nature's form gain an aura of both movement and tranquility achieved through a combination of brisk, impressionistic brushstrokes and rich, expressionistic color. In the tradition of Greek classical art, she depicts Nature and its inherent order -- an idealized and atemporal vision of the external world that brings clarity, harmony and restraint to the fore.
Born in New York and raised in California, Joyce is a graduate of Stanford University in Art History and East Asian Studies. Traditional brush paintings of the Sung Dynasty (c. 960 -1026 AD) drew her towards the study of art history and after viewing a major retrospective by the Chinese abstract expressionist, ZAO Wou-ki in 1996, she began her exploration of artistic creation. Since 2000, her works have been exhibited at Stanford University and Half Moon Bay in California and Hong Kong.
